Picked for your Pleasure! 1976 CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (ELTON JOHN) PINBALL MACHINE. Up for your consideration is an original 1976 Captain Fantastic Pinball Machine by Bally. Made by Bally in June, 1976. Classic artwork by David Christensen. Inspired by the movie Tommy. Fantastic’ was inspired by the movie’Tommy’ and includes a representation of Elton John, as his character from the movie, playing pinball on the backglass. This legendary electro-mechanical pinball was built in 1976; it was the last production year before all pinball machines went to solid state electronics (first generation of the microprocessor). Only 16,155 were ever made. David Christensen did the artwork for this Bally game, using a lot of bright reds and blues. Piano keyboards appeared throughout the game, which was one of the first featuring custom-designed bumper caps with drawings of Elton Johns face. The back glass pictured a crowd scene based on the movie Tommy. This game also features mirror lines worked into the back glass art for a dazzling reflective effect. The background crowd features some of the artists friends as well as other historical figures. Greg Kmiec created the playfield design, which has a pleasing, uncluttered arrangement of targets and bumpers, plus four flippers. Note on the backglass: Artist Dave Christensen included in the backglass several depictions of people doing things that, at first, escaped notice by Bally management. A small number of games with these so-called “X-rated” or uncensored backglasses made it through production before changes were required to be made. Specifically, small mirrored stars were added over the objectionable parts and, curiously, these stars did not effectively obscure the offending art in all instances. The X-rated version is often referred to as the “no stars” version even though all of the backglasses in the production run did contain a certain number of peripheral decorative stars anyway. Nieman is depicted in the backglass as the man in the three-piece suit, and he says that’Brutus’ is artist Paul Faris. The backglass on this machine is in very good condition with no apparent scratches. The playing field and cabinet shows moderate signs of use (see pictures). The machine powers up and is playable. This item is in fair condition with moderate signs of use. All working parts appear to be in fair working order; this machine will need a good tune-up for competition play.
