This machine is considered by many people to be the best system 3, dmd type machine produced. The ruleset depth is unlike any other gottlieb, or almost any other pinball.

For those looking for basic information or reviews of the game, you can read up on it on ipdb (the first hit you’ll get if you google the game name). It is a pretty cool game i have to say. Never thought a gottlieb would be the one for me to say this about, but it has probably the best dmd animations i have seen. Unfortunately for it, i’m finding that i have more of a preference for older, simpler, single level games. In fact, this one is the only multiball game i have! Unfortunately, this machine has not had an easy life. Somewhere along the way, it got moved into a carport type storage environment, and was pretty darn near left for dead. The elements took their toll on the metal and paint, and defaced an otherwise solid machine.

A few different people who have operated, collected, and restored pinballs for 20-30+ years saw what i ended up with, and pretty much all agreed that i was crazy for trying to save this one! Its been a few months since i did a full, topside teardown and shop out on this game. As such, there is some playfield/rubber dust, but it is still very clean and presentable. All the rubber was replaced on the machine, going to the superior white rubber, and factory correct black rubber posts and flipper rubbers.

There are a couple light bulbs out at this point, but it is still very presentable. Here’s a quick general overview the machine. Playfield: it has had its cosmetic challenges. The majority of the playfield has been protected by the factory mylar, which is still largely intact. The areas down by the flipper, left outlane/ball save area, and near the top of the playfield were down to bare wood when i got the machine.

This was my first attempt at playfield touch ups and waterslide decals, and although these areas are certainly improved from how i got them, they look like something that your second grader probably could have done (okay, they aren’t that bad, but far from perfect). Despite being clear coated in, the decal patch between the flippers is flaking off where the edge of the mylar is oops… There are a few other amateurish touchups here and there, but that’s the worst of it.

To the best of my knowledge, everything is working on the game. All the solenoids, flippers, bumpers, targets, etc. Seem to work just fine. The glidercraft comes out of the pyramid and works. A switch or two may need to be adjusted, but that sort of thing is going to need to happen anytime a game is moved anyways.

Any metal parts on the game, whether above or below the playfield, may show evidence of oxidization, but are functional. Ramps: the metal ramps and habitrails certainly show evidence of the environment they came from. They are not overly pitted or corroded, and i did my best to clean them up. The plastic skill shot ramp has cracks and breakage, but is still functional. Plastics: all present and accounted for, and generally in good condition. There is a hairline crack or two in the plastics at the back of the game, buried under the ramps and gizmos. The notable exception is the large, clear plastic on the right, above the wireform ramp. This piece has been broken and reglued, and also a crease where it had been used in lieu of the lockdown bar, which was mia when i got the machine. Cabinet: the cabinet, as a whole, is rock solid, but is not a looker. There is some minor swelling on the top piece of the backbox. If you look carefully at the pictures, you’ll see how this piece is slightly taller than the rest of the wood by maybe a quarter inch. It is hardly noticeable unless you are looking for it, but there you have it.

Due it the humid environment it was in, the cabinet has lost some paint, which has been brushed with black acrylic, which works great for small areas, but not as great for larger areas (see the front of the right side of the machine). Also, the side rails, lockdown bar, and legs have been painted gloss black and cleared with triple thick. There was so much rust and pitting, this was the only viable way to save them.

New red flipper buttons were installed and are nice and springy. Those are williams legs that i had to transplant onto the game in order for it to fit in my low ceiling basement (they’re only 28″ as opposed to the gottlieb 31″). Aside from the black paint, they have new leg levelers.

You can say what you want when comparing gottliebs to bally/williams games, but there is no doubt that this is one rock solid board set! I have replaced a few parts and done a couple upgrades as well. The 5v regulator was just replaced today. A mosfet or two on the driver board got replaced. The mpu lithium battery was removed and replaced with a remote battery holder on the side of the backbox (as recommended in the clay harrell guides).

Changing the batteries remember to do it once a year! Is now as simple as popping out 2 aas and popping in 2 new ones! Also, the grounds have been upgraded, and tied together. A new power cord has been installed on the game. As is commonly seen on route games, the tilt relay (all it does is turn off the the gi lamps) has been defeated and will not be an issue.

Rope light in the backbox: these are usually shot, as was this one when i got it. So, i put in a brand new, proper, rope light and it looks fantastic! No dots, rows, or columns out that i can see.
Backglass: again, as commonly seen on route games, the backglass is no longer glass, but a piece of plexi. The translight is in fair condition (on the scale from poor - great). The bottom lift channel and right side trim are there, but the top and left trim are gone. This does not affect the game when its installed. Cash can with lid and manual are both present and accounted for!

So there you have it. She may not be the prettiest girl at the dance, but treat her right, and she’ll have you smiling at the end of the night!

Com, but you are responsible for any and all coordination. If you have any questions or need any additional pictures, please feel free to ask away. If you get it to your house and something doesn’t work - sorry!
